Those who have purchased the affected products should return them for a full refund

Lidl is the latest major supermarket to issue a food recall, as several snack bars are pulled from shelves.

Various Alesto Raw Fruit & Nut Bars may contain pieces of plastic, making them unsafe to eat.

Lidl warned that due to the "possible presence of plastic foreign bodies", the snack bars may present a "choking hazard".

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all Lidl stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and what they should do if they have bought the products.

Lidl told customers not to consume the affected items and instead return them to stores, where they will be given a full refund.

The supermarket assured shoppers that no other Lidl products are affected by the recall.

Lidl apologised to shoppers for any inconvenience caused and thanked them for their cooperation.

For further information, affected customers can contact Lidl Customer Care at customer.care@lidl.co.uk or 0203 966 5566.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) echoed the advice, urging shoppers to avoid consumption.

This comes as Britons were issued a "do not eat" warning as chicken products were pulled from shelves due to "serious" health risks.

Officials warned that a discovery of Listeria monocytogenes prompted the recall.

Food and product recalls should always be taken seriously to ensure customer safety. The FSA shared why product recalls and withdrawals are issued.

About product recalls and withdrawals

"If there is a problem with a food product, that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

"In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers."
