Shoppers should return the affected product to their place of purchase

A frozen ready meal sold by Farmfoods has been recalled after prawns were discovered in a product labelled as chicken curry.

The retailer is retracting its Ultimate Keralan Chicken Curry, sold in 400g packs with product code L550 and a best-before date of February 13, 2026.

The contamination occurred when prawns were mistakenly included during production, but the ingredient was not listed on the packaging.

This oversight created a serious health hazard for consumers who suffer from crustacean allergies.

In light of this, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an official recall notice covering England, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

The agency said: "If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to crustaceans, do not eat it."

Farmfoods has been advised to notify allergy support groups about the recall, ensuring vulnerable consumers receive warnings through their membership networks.

Shop notices have been displayed at Farmfoods locations to alert customers about the contamination issue.

These explain the reasons behind the withdrawal and guide affected purchasers.

Consumers who purchased the affected product and have crustacean allergies should avoid eating it and bring it back to their point of purchase for a complete refund.

The company expressed regret over the incident, stating: "We take consumer safety very seriously and sincerely apologise to our loyal customers for this situation and any inconvenience it may cause."

Symptoms of a fish and shellfish allergy

Seafood is a collective term that includes both fish and shellfish. Shellfish are further divided into crustaceans and molluscs.

Allergy UK stated: "A fish/shellfish allergic reaction occurs when the body recognises the food protein as harmful and mounts an allergic response.

"An allergic reaction to seafood can be mild or moderate (swollen lips, face or eyes, itching, tingling mouth, hives, rash, abdominal pain, vomiting) or severe (breathing difficulties, dizziness or collapse).

"Fish/shellfish reactions have the potential to cause anaphylaxis, which is the most severe form of an allergic reaction."

About allergy alerts

"Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold.

"Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect, or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert."
