Motorists are being encouraged to check the weather before setting off

Motorists have been issued with an urgent warning across multiple parts of the UK as Storm Floris makes landfall.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for much of the north of England, North Wales and Scotland, with an amber wind warning for most of Scotland.

Road users in Scotland, North West, Yorkshire and Humber, and the North East of England are advised to check ahead and plan for disruptions to their journeys.

National Highways has warned that Storm Floris will bring strong winds across the network throughout Monday (August 4), with storm force winds expected in many northern parts of the UK.

It warned that high-sided vehicles, caravans, motorbikes and other vulnerable vehicles are advised to "take extra care when travelling due to the increased risk".

Many inland areas are likely to see gusts of between 40 and 50mph, while storm force winds between 60 and 70mph are expected along coasts and high ground.

The Met Office warns that there is a danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

It adds that some roads and bridges will be closed, with British drivers being told to prepare for longer journey times.

Storm Floris could also bring delays along roads across the country, in addition to cancellations with road, rail, air and ferry services affected.

Guidance from the Met Office states: "Driving in these conditions can be dangerous, for yourself and other road users."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

It advises drivers to be aware of high-sided vehicles and caravans on more exposed roads, while separate guidance was given for overtaking, as they should give cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries, and buses more room than usual.

The A66 in County Durham/Cumbria is closed in both directions to high-sided vehicles between the A67 near Bowes and the A685 near Brough due to strong winds.

Any road users travelling across the Pennines should plan ahead and consider alternative routes, including the A69.

National Highways added: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

Storm Floris is also causing havoc for airports in the north of England and Scotland, with Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow Airport telling passengers to check with their airline for the latest information on their flights.

Storm Floris is the sixth named storm of the 2024/25 season and will bring "unusually strong" winds, with some predicting that speeds of 90mph could be seen.
