Some of the most popular models on the road are ranked as being incredibly unreliable

A former staple of UK roads has been ranked as the most reliable car, while some of the most common and expensive cars placed near the bottom of the list.

The Toyota Previa has secured the highest position in a new reliability survey, achieving an exceptional rating of 9.8 out of 10 for its combination of dependability and affordable repair costs.

The minivan was produced by the Japanese manufacturer for almost 30 years and has been described as a "revolutionary people carrier" by Toyota UK Magazine.

Drivers were blessed with seven seats, plenty of space in the rear of the vehicle and the option of an automatic or manual gearbox.

The MotorEasy Reliability Index analysed 341 different models from 45 manufacturers using actual repair claims data.

The scoring system examines both the frequency of repairs and their average costs to create an accurate assessment of vehicle reliability.

Hybrid vehicles have made significant gains in the reliability rankings, with two models now featuring among the top 10 performers, including the Lexus CT and the Toyota C-HR.

Both vehicles earned identical overall ratings of 9.7 out of 10, though the Lexus CT's superior ranking stems from its more economical repair expenses.

Duncan McClure Fisher, chief executive of Intelligent Motoring and MotorEasy's founder, said: "With AFVs making up nearly 42 per cent of new car registrations last year, it's no surprise we're seeing them rise through our rankings - a trend we expect to accelerate rapidly."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Tesla Model X occupies last place in the reliability rankings due to its high frequency of repair claims. The electric SUV's poor performance highlights ongoing dependability challenges for the manufacturer.

Premium marques dominate the bottom tier of the index, with three Jaguar Land Rover models - the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Land Rover Discovery - all receiving low ratings.

All vehicles in the bottom ten received identical scores of just one out of 10, indicating severe reliability concerns across these premium manufacturers.

Mr McClure Fisher continued, saying: "Just a few years ago, faults were a rarity across our repair network.

"Today, however, Tesla ranks last out of 45 manufacturers for frequency of repairs and only avoids the bottom spot overall because brands like Bentley and Land Rover carry such high relative repair costs."
