More than three million drivers have been slapped with hefty fines for speeding violations, causing huge safety concerns on UK roads.
According to new research by Legal Expert, the scale of enforcement activity represents approximately one driver being caught every 10 seconds across the nation.
Fixed penalty notices for speeding carry a standard £100 charge, meaning the total value of potential fines reached £333,823,000 over the year ending March 2025.

| PA/GETTYThe research revealed the enormous scope of speed limit violations occurring on British roads, as each speeding offence typically results in three penalty points being added to a driver's licence.
But in more serious cases, drivers could be disqualified from driving if they build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years. The Metropolitan Police Service recorded the highest number of violations with 776,553 offences throughout Greater London during 2024/25.
West Yorkshire Police followed with 282,122 recorded incidents, while Greater Manchester Police documented 201,697 cases.
Both West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester experienced increases exceeding 20 per cent compared to the previous year's figures. Over the past four years, these two regions combined have accumulated 1,569,896 speeding violations between them.

A speed camera positioned at the junction between the A38 and B6018 in Nottinghamshire has been identified as the nation's most active enforcement location.

| ESSEX POLICEAnother shocking incident involved a motorist in Buckinghamshire who reached 136mph on a 30mph road in February, exceeding the speed limit by 106mph. Despite the severity of this violation, it ranked as only the second-worst offence in the Thames Valley region.
The data revealed that 30 police forces across the country recorded at least one incident where drivers exceeded speed limits by 50mph or more. These extreme cases highlight the dangerous speeds some motorists are willing to reach on public roads.
The introduction of 20mph speed limits across Wales and parts of England has created particular enforcement challenges for police forces.
North Wales Police caught thousands of drivers violating these reduced limits, including nearly 700 motorists who travelled at least 40mph through 20mph zones.
