This is the second major incident on the M6 today

Motorists are being warned of long delays on the motorway after reports of an "overturned caravan" have led to hours-long delays on the busy stretch of road.

The M6 northbound between J41 (Catterlen) and J42 (Carleton) has been shut following a collision.

Posting on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, National Highways: North West stated that there are around three miles of congestion on the approach.

National Highways maps show that the event will be cleared between 1pm and 1.15pm, although this could change.

However, drivers will have to wait longer for normal traffic conditions to return, with this expected to happen at around 2.15pm.

A spokesperson to AA Traffic and Travel said: "Partially blocked and slow traffic due to rolled over vehicle on M6 Northbound from Junction 33 A6 Preston Lancaster Road (Lancaster South/Garstang) to J34 A683 Bay Gateway (Lancaster)."

The incident has caused further delays along the M6, with slow-moving traffic towards Junction 32, as well as between J1 and J2 on the M55.

Stationary traffic can also be seen on the western road surrounding Preston, with gridlock at J31 of the M6.

It comes as drivers face hours-long delays further south on the M6 after a lorry collided with the central reservation and caused a "significant spillage of diesel".

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The M6 in Staffordshire remains closed northbound between J14 (Stafford) and J15 (Stoke on Trent) following the accident.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police reported that only the lorry was involved, which prompted the ongoing closure of the M6.

They added: ‘Single vehicle RTC. HGV has collided with nearside and central barriers resulting in the HGV turning over spilling diesel all over the carriageway.

"Luckily no injuries report. Road likely to be closed most of the morning for resurfacing and repairs."

Traffic cameras show the highway being resurfaced as cars crawl past on the southbound carriageway, as delays remain.

As a result of the diesel spillage, contractors are being forced to "plane" three of the northbound lanes, which will see maintenance teams remove the top layer of tarmac.
