The A590 between Barrow and the M6 is expected to be the worst area for traffic delays

Drivers have been warned to expect delays on a major motorway next week as a huge charity event gets underway with thousands of motorbikes set to hit the road.

Drivers travelling to Cumbria and those using the A590 between Barrow and the M6 have been advised that the roads will be busier than usual.

The traffic warning comes as motorcyclists from all over the country will be heading to Barrow on Saturday, June 8 for “Dave Day”.

The event celebrates the life of TV chef Dave Myers, who was best known for being one-half of the Hairy Bikers, and who was born in the town and died earlier this year.

As many as 15,000 motorcyclists are expected to be heading for Barrow over the weekend using Junction 36 of the M6 and the A590 which is likely to be unusually busy.

Meanwhile, other events such as the Great North Swim at Windermere will take place on Friday, June 7.

Other events such as the Cumbria VAG Show and Shine car festival at the Westmorland Show Ground will also take place on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.

A farming Café Ambio on Saturday will also promote higher levels of traffic to the area along the A590 and or around junction 36 of the M6.

Elsewhere in the county, the annual Appleby Horse Fair takes place during the June weekend along the A66 near Penrith off Junction 40 of the M6.

The Cumberland Show is also being held along the A69 at Warwick Bridge near Junction 43 of the M6 in Carlisle on Saturday.

To combat the potential busy period National Highways said it has taken several measures to ensure a smooth weekend.

The agency will be working closely with Cumbria Police and Westmorland and Furness Council who are on hand to help ensure all the events get underway.

Offering advice to drivers heading up North next weekend, National Highways suggested drivers plan and leave plenty of time for journeys.

The agency said: “This will probably be the first really busy weekend of the summer on the county’s roads.

“While the regional control centre and on road traffic officers will be working around the clock to keep everyone on the move, there is plenty drivers can do to help themselves.”

By checking travel conditions before setting out drivers could also save themselves a lot of time.

Drivers coming to the charity event should also ensure they and their motorbikes or cars are fit for the journey and topped up with fuel.

Checking the latest updates on the social media channels and the National Highways website will also offer drivers the most up-to-date advice.
