Crash expected to cause delays for drivers until roughly 4pm

A major incident has forced one of the busiest motorways to shut after multiple vehicles collided early this morning.

The crash along the M6 affected Junction Three and Junction Two near Coventry, with southbound lanes closed causing at least one hour of delays for drivers.

Emergency services including the air ambulance were called to the scene while the response is being led by Warwickshire police.

The northbound lanes have been opened, but drivers are warned to expect delays and congestion while the incident gets dealt with.

National Highways has put diversions in place for drivers to help minimise the impact of the road closures.

Drivers are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs and exit at Junction Three and take the fourth exit from the roundabout onto the A444 towards Coventry.

From here drivers should keep left on the approach to the roundabout and take the dedicated lane to the eastbound A428 Binley Road.

They should follow the A428 Binley Road eastbound to the junction with the A46.

At the roundabout drivers need to take the first exit onto the A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass.

From there they should head north on the A46 and keep left to avoid joining the M69 until they reach Junction Two of the M6.

At the junction roundabout take the fourth exit to re-join the M6 southbound.

Earlier this week three of four lanes on the M6 northbound between J18 Holmes Chapel and J19 Tabley in Cheshire were forced to close after a major incident was announced.

The crash saw drivers face long delays in excess of 90 minutes on the northbound portion of the motorway as work continues, with around six miles of disruption.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said at the time: "Emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic collision involving five heavy goods vehicles on lanes 1-3 of the Northbound carriageway of the M6 between J18 and J19.

"Nobody is trapped however there are lane closures in place and disruption is expected in the area."

Cheshire Police have reported that one person is believed to have sustained "serious injuries".
