Drivers were urged to find an alternative route

The M20 motorway was shut in both directions by police this afternoon over "concern for a man" who some eye-witnesses have claimed they saw "covered in blood".

Drivers were warned the the road was closed between junctions 7 and 8 while emergency services were in attendance.

National Highways reported delays on approach of at least 45 minutes.

It said on social media: "Traffic is currently stopped on the M20 between J7 (Maidstone) and J8 (Hollingbourne) in both directions for an ongoing incident.

"Currently approx. 2 miles of congestion on approach both ways."

Drivers on the road claimed to have seen a man walking down the motorway prior to the closure of all lanes in both directions.

One tweeted: “An Eastern European guy covered in blood just tried getting in my car saying he had been beaten up.

“He was just casually walking down the middle of the motorway.”

Another added: “Same happened to me. Was very confused as to what was going on but had the foresight to lock all the doors when we saw him approaching.”

A spokesperson for Kent Police confirmed they were in attendance due to an incident but did not elaborate.

In a statement they said: "Emergency services are at the scene and the motorway is currently closed in both directions while the incident is responded to.

"Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes where possible.”
