Drivers are being warned of long delays along a key stretch of a busy motorway after a HGV blaze has forced the roads to close.

The M180 in Lincolnshire has been closed westbound between J4 Broughton Interchange (Lincoln A15; Scunthorpe (A18)) and J3 Midmoor Interchange (Scunthorpe (W) M181) due to a lorry fire.

National Highways is warning that the lorry fire on the hard shoulder has caused the roads to close, with Humberside Fire and Rescue dealing with the incident.

Traffic has been stopped, with motorists told to expect delays and allow extra journey time.

Posting on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, Humberside Fire and Rescue provided an update on the M180 incident.

It wrote: "CONTROL - We are currently dealing with an HGV fire at the M180 Junction 3 for the M181.

"Motorists should try to avoid the area if possible."

National Highways traffic maps suggest that the event will clear between 1.15pm and 1.30pm.

At present, it is expected that normal traffic conditions will return at a similar time, although this could be extended.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said: "We received a call just before 8am and crews arrived quickly at the scene.

"Three fire engines were sent and a fire in an HGV trailer was swiftly extinguished.

"There were no casualties and thanks to the quick actions of the driver, the load was successfully disconnected from the HGV, preventing the fire from spreading to the vehicle. Our firefighters remained on scene for around an hour."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Motorists currently stuck in traffic are being advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs.

They should exit the M180 using the J4 exit slip road and proceed to the roundabout, where they can take the third exit onto the A15.

At the next roundabout, they will take the first exit on the A18 and proceed for around two miles until the roundabout with the A1029.

Taking the third exit, they will travel for approximately three miles to the roundabout with the A1077. They will proceed for a further three miles to the roundabout towards the motorway.

The diversion signs will tell them to take the second exit onto the A1077(M) and drive one mile to the roundabout with the M181.

A further two miles will take them to the M18 J3/M181 Interchange, where they can take the slip road and rejoin the M180 westbound.

National Highways warned: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
