Motorists who shop at one of the biggest supermarkets in the UK could receive a massive boost simply for charging their vehicle.

Sainsbury's is launching the "biggest ever Nectar points giveaway" through its Smart Charge electric vehicle charging network.

Electric car owners who charge at any Sainsbury's Smart Charge location across the UK and add their Nectar card will be automatically entered into the competition.

Until July 20, 2025, people who charge at Smart Charge locations could be in with the chance to win one million Nectar points.

The prize, which is worth at least £5,000 in rewards, can be used at more than 500 of Sainsbury's partner stores.

The Smart Charge network launched in January 2024, with thousands of motorists making use of the ultra-rapid charging capabilities while doing their shopping.

There are more than 650 ultra-rapid charging bays operational across more than 75 Sainsbury's stores nationwide.

Drivers can collect one Nectar point when they spend £1 on charging, once they have registered their Nectar card with Smart Charge.

Patrick Dunne, chief property and procurement officer and MD of Smart Charge, said the new prize was a "brilliant way" for the supermarket to reward its loyal customers.

He added: "Smart Charge makes EV charging simple, reliable, accessible, and affordable for all EV drivers across the UK.

"We're proud to be the UK’s first EV charging service to offer loyalty rewards from Nectar, the UK’s largest multi-partner loyalty programme at our charging hubs."

Several popular fuel and charging cards are accepted at Smart Charge locations, including Allstar, Octopus Electroverse, Plugsurfing, Rightcharge and Paua.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

In May, Sainsbury's announced that it had saved the equivalent of 60 million fossil fuel miles on UK roads through the Smart Charge network.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood praised the rollout of the Smart Charge network and the role it was playing in helping motorists switch away from petrol and diesel cars.

Labour recently announced that it would be scrapping red tape to ensure drivers and businesses could avoid being held up by planning permission when installing EV chargers.

Drivers visiting their local Sainsbury's store will pay 72p per kWh, making Smart Charge one of the lowest tap-and-go ultra-rapid charging rates available.

Amir Rasekh, managing director of Nectar360, which owns and operates Nectar, said: "With one million points on offer, customers have the freedom to use their reward in ways that are most meaningful to them; from groceries to travel and technology.

"Whether customers are heading off on a summer road trip or simply topping up while doing the weekly shop, this promotion is a great way for us to reward EV drivers through Nectar, offering one lucky customer the chance to win big, while giving all Smart Charge users the benefit of earning points every time they charge."

The latest data from Zapmap shows that there are 82,369 electric vehicle charging devices across the UK at more than 40,000 locations, with 1,371 installed in the last month alone.

Experts are hopeful that the UK will see the installation of 300,000 EV chargers by the end of the decade to ensure motorists have confidence in switching to an electric car.
