British drivers could be saving £1,500 a year if they transition to an electric car, as almost all EV drivers report that they would never switch back to petrol or diesel.

New data has found that the potential annual savings have jumped to £1,500 per year, including all running costs, namely maintenance, insurance and fuel.

Two in five second-hand electric cars are now under £20,000, while 33 new electric cars can be purchased for less than £30,000.

Many experts expect electric cars to reach price parity with equivalent petrol and diesel vehicles as soon as next year, in a major step forward for net zero ambitions.

Many of the world's most popular car manufacturers are aiming to slash prices further with plans to release new EVs for under £20,000.

Electric vehicles are also becoming more diverse, with drivers able to find an EV that matches their daily habits.

An increasing number of urban cars are coming to the market, with lower ranges and prices, while long-range vehicles are also coming down in price.

The data, from Auto Trader, ChargeUK and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), found that a new electric vehicle has a battery range of an impressive 290 miles, which is around two weeks' worth of driving for the average Briton.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood praised the development of new electric vehicles, saying: "It's brilliant to see the great work the industry is doing in showcasing all the benefits of the transition.

"We're investing £4billion to help industry and drivers make a supported switch to electric vehicles, while backing manufacturers and supporting jobs by securing global trade deals and helping put money in the pockets of hardworking people - all part of delivering our Plan for Change."

On average, a new charger is added to the public charging network every 29 minutes, highlighting the growing expansion of the UK's EV infrastructure.

According to Zapmap data, there are almost 81,000 charging devices across the UK at 39,773 different locations.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The UK aims to have 300,000 chargers installed by the end of the decade in a bid to stimulate trust in the charging network and help drivers switch to electric cars.

The quarterly update, which is now also supported by EVA England, BVRLA and Cox Automotive Europe, is endorsed by the Department for Transport.

Vicky Edmonds, CEO of EVA England, said: "As a drivers' association, we campaign to make the transition to electric driving affordable and accessible to all.

"Part of that is dispelling the myths and making sure drivers understand the benefits of their cars and how to make the most of them."

Data from EVA England also shows that nine in 10 people who switch to an electric car never consider buying a petrol or diesel model again.

The number of independent retailers stocking at least one electric vehicle is up by almost a quarter, while 40 per cent of retailers now stock at least one EV.

Karoline Baumann, Strategy and Growth Director at Cox Automotive Europe, praised the development of electric vehicle savings for motorists.

She noted that Government support was still needed, although the initiative by Auto Trader was a meaningful step towards boosting the uptake of zero emission vehicles.
