Ingredients in the drink may increase total sleep time and improve sleep efficiency

Failing to get the recommended eight hours of sleep can have ripple effects on our health, both in the short and long term.

Social media users have shared a wide array of remedies to combat sleep troubles. Many, however, prove to be fads.

Hormone balance health coach Becca Holland says she relies on a bedtime beverage to promote better quality slumber.

“You probably find it annoying when people say they’re going to give you a recipe for a hormone-balancing drink,” Becca said.

“It’s just so vague, but I’m going to tell you why this one is actually beneficial for you.

“I have this every night before bedtime because not only does it help with sleep, but also with inflammation and immunity.

“It’s great for digestion - the list goes on. Use whatever type of milk you want.”

The caption of her post added: “Golden milk has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to support inflammation, hormone balance, and relaxation.”

The health coach's recipe requires the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • A pinch of black pepper (boosts absorption)
  • ¼ tsp ashwagandha powder

Together, the ingredients “support melatonin production for deep sleep,” noted Becca, with additional benefits including reduced stress hormones and liver detoxification.

While each ingredient promotes sleep through different mechanisms, ashwaganda may offer the most benefit for relaxation.

Several studies have shown that it reduced time to fall asleep, increased total sleep time, improved sleep efficiency, and better alertness upon waking.

In one trial, participants taking the supplement reported up to a 72 per cent improvement in sleep quality, compared to 29 per cent in the placebo group.

This is particularly beneficial for individuals with insomnia or stress-induced sleeplessness.
