High blood pressure and high cholesterol frequently come as a pair because they share a host of risk factors.
But fortunately, red cabbage is emerging as a nutritional powerhouse that can help tackle both silent killers, according to health experts.
Often passed over for more fashionable vegetables, red cabbage contains a remarkable combination of beneficial compounds.
Its distinctive purple hue indicates its rich content of polyphenols and anthocyanins, which combat inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.

"Red cabbage is one of the most underrated superfoods in the supermarket," explained Professor Franklin Joseph, nutrition expert at Dr Frank's Weight Loss and Health Clinic.
"It's rich in fibre, low in calories and packed with compounds that support gut health, reduce LDL cholesterol and promote a healthy immune system.
"It's incredible food, especially when you consider the price."
He went on to explain that the vegetable packs a generous amount of gut-friendly fibre, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that have been associated with better digestion, lower cholesterol levels and decreased blood pressure.
These nutritional properties make red cabbage particularly valuable for supporting long-term health.
What's more, red cabbage's prebiotic fibre nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, creating a balanced microbiome.
"Gut health plays a huge role in everything from immunity to mood regulation," explained Professor Joseph.
"Adding a few spoonfuls of raw or lightly cooked red cabbage to your meals is a simple way to support that."
Beyond digestive benefits, red cabbage contains sulforaphane-like compounds similar to those in broccoli, which may help reduce cancer risk. "It's not just about fibre or digestion," Prof Joseph added.
"Red cabbage supports detox pathways in the liver, helps lower inflammation, and has even been linked to improved heart health thanks to its antioxidant profile."

A whole red cabbage typically costs around 79p at retailers including Sainsbury's and Tesco, making it one of the most economical nutritional investments available.
This represents exceptional value compared to many promoted health foods that carry premium price tags.
"In a time when many people feel priced out of healthy eating, red cabbage proves that you don't need to spend a fortune to eat for longevity," Prof Joseph said.
In a 2024 study published in BMC Medicine, researchers observed significant blood pressure reductions in participants who consumed a daily soup of cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, for two weeks.
