Combined with exercise, a healthy diet is one of the best methods to accelerate weight loss

Located deep in the abdomen, visceral fat can raise a person’s risk of diabetes, heart disease, as well as a slew of other life-changing chronic conditions, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.

However, it can be tough to tackle. For those looking to trim away fat around the middle, the key might be hidden in your weekly shopping list.

In fact, a group of nutritional experts have hailed spinach, which is rich in a plant compound called carotenoid with lutein and zeaxanthin, as a beneficial ingredient that can help melt the stubborn fat away.

Those suffering from obesity generally have lower levels of the antioxidant in their bloodstream, which is found in plenty of fruit and vegetables - including the leafy green.

One study has showed that those with the highest levels of carotenoids in their system also had less visceral fat than those with the lowest levels of the compound, dietitian Molly Synder explained.

Consequently, the consumption of carotenoid-rich vegetables has been praised as a way to accelerate fat oxidation and decrease inflammation.

Equally, nutritional expert Diane Han told Eating Well that, due to the leafy greens’ high fibre and water content, spinach can help you feel full for longer.

Studies have indicated that those who enjoy a fibre-fuelled diet have less visceral fat than those with low levels of fibre on their menu.

An adult should aim for around 28 grams of fibre as part of their daily intake - and just one cup of cooked spinach equals around four grams of it.

Additionally, it can lead to a decreased calorie intake and ameliorate cholesterol levels - both of which are linked to visceral fat.

“Of course, carotenoids alone won’t cause fat loss, but regularly including carotenoid-rich vegetables like spinach in meals, along with protein, fibre and healthy fats, supports a metabolic environment that can help reduce visceral fat over time,” dietitian Anar Allidina told the health platform.

Before making any major changes to your diet, it is always best to consult a medical professional.

Other ways to target the fat can be through increased exercise and with a combination of resistance training and aerobic exercise.

Anar explained that even short daily walks after meals can prove beneficial, denouncing any claims which suggest having to spend hours in the gym to accelerate fat loss.
