The author blasted Ireland's 2023 Eurovision act in a row on Twitter

JK Rowling slammed an Irish Eurovision group accusing them of "preening, self-satisfied misogyny" after they sacked their creative director over a trans tweet.

Eurovision band, Wild Youth said they were parting ways with Ian Banham and would no longer let him "near our team" after a screenshot surfaced on Twitter, showing a post that appeared to be from his account.

His post referred to an article about transgender woman Zara Jade who stabbed her partner before tying her up and running away with her bank card, which featured a headline referring to Jade as a "woman".

The band’s frontman Conor O'Donohoe told fans that reading the tweet had made him "feel sick".

Jade was sentenced to nine years in prison with an additional three years on licence after pleading guilty to six offences; including false imprisonment, assault and robbery, to serve the time in a male prison.

Following the sentence a tweet allegedly from Banham's account said: "Exactly! it's a MAN! This clown world is ridiculous..."

Rowling defended his comments, alongside the Twitter hashtag #IStandWithIanBanham.

She said: "The re-traumatisation of female rape survivors, including this man's victims, on seeing him called a woman by the press counts for nothing, naturally.

"The so-called kindness and inclusivity of bandwildyouth is preening, self-satisfied misogyny.

"For those confused as to why Ian Banham was fired and publicly lambasted by bandwildyouth, here's one of his 'horrifying' tweets.

"His crime is standing against the insanity of pretending knife-wielding rapists are women if they say they are."

Irish broadcaster RTE said: "Ian Banham is no longer a member of Ireland's Eurovision 2023 team. RTE won't be making any further comment".

Wild Youth are set to perform their song We Are One at the Liverpool Arena during the first semi-final of the Eurovision competition next month.

Rowling has previously spoken about her views on transgender issues over recent years.

But the author behind the Harry Potter franchise has strongly denied accusations of transphobia.
