Vicky McClure returned to screens to lead the drama on Sunday night

The second season of Trigger Point on ITV has been met with a rather divided reaction from its fanbase following its hotly-anticipated return.

Line of Duty star Vicky McClure was back to lead the drama as Lana 'Wash' Washington' after her character's six-month secondment overseas.

Season two kicked off with Lana returning to the Met only to discover the threat of bomb and drone attacks lingered.

As the drama unfolded, it soon became clear to Lana and the team that the threat of terrorism stemmed from enemies close to home.

"We're taking back the power for the people," one haunting message from the terrorists read during one of their live streams to the police.

With all six episodes now on ITVX, fans have learned the group is being portrayed as a far-right-leaning cell looking to overthrow the government.

Lana also returned to find Commander John Francis (Julian Ovendun) in charge and that her workplace had transformed somewhat, with misogyny and sexism highlighted as prevalent issues in the workplace.

But it's the terror plot that has irked some who accused the ITV drama of overplaying the role right-wing groups have within terrorism.

For instance, Islamic extremism has been tied to the 2017 Westminster Bridge attack, and the Manchester Arena, London Bridge and Parson's Green bombings in recent years.

In contrast, in 2017, a white man drove into a group of Muslim worshippers in Finsbury Park, and the murder of MP Jo Cox was motivated by "violent white supremacism" according to the judge.

Following depictions in the second season of Trigger Point, one fan fumed: "#TriggerPoint. Wow ….didn’t know the biggest threat of terrorist bombs on our streets, is from far right groups? More woke, biased, mind bending nonsense from @itv."

A second echoed: "Well done @itv you made a great idea #triggerpoint into another load of wokeycokey bulls***!"

"Far right again? Creative! #triggerpoint," a third criticised while a fourth added: "ITV's #TriggerPoint has proven to be a disappointment. Despite the presence of the wonderful Vicky McClure the scripts are woke nonsense smoothed over with drama in the hope you won't notice. A bit like a delicious sauce concealing a turd."

And another fumed: "Binged it…..apart from a few shock points it was a load of old cock tbh. Baddies who weren’t believable, woke stereotypes, and a plot so far fetched I laughed out loud at times. Still, it killed a dull Sunday. #TriggerPoint."

"Absolute s***e. Badly acted woke c**p.#TriggerPoint," another hit out while one viewer brutally switched off as they critiqued: "#Triggerpoint absolutely garbage totally overacted. One episode was enough."

However, there has been plenty of support for the drama's return as well, including from one viewer who lauded: "Oh my, that first episode of #TriggerPoint Season 2 was amazing... coming back with a bang, if you'll pardon the pun."

Another also heaped praise on the show: "I’m halfway through Series 2 of Trigger Point and this series had me hooked from the first episode.

"Best TV drama so far this year. Loving Vicky McClure’s return. #TriggerPoint #ITV." (sic)
