Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville has paid an emotional tribute to the late Dame Maggie Smith, vowing that the beloved franchise’s final film will serve as a lasting homage to her legacy.
Appearing on The One Show this week, Bonneville, 61, reflected on the poignant experience of filming Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the final chapter in a series that has captivated audiences worldwide for over 15 years.
“It was quite poignant making the show knowing that it would be the last film, knowing that her character had passed away and then in real life, she passed away after we finished filming,” he said.
The actor, best known for his role as Lord Grantham, went on to make a heartfelt promise to honour Dame Maggie’s memory.

PA“Really, this final film will be a proper tribute to her and to the legacy of the show, which is coming to an end after 15 years,” he said.
Dame Maggie Smith, who passed away in September aged 89, was widely regarded as the soul of Downton Abbey, portraying the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess, Lady Violet Crawley.
Her wit, presence, and iconic delivery made her a fan favourite and one of the most memorable characters in British television history.
The newly released trailer for The Grand Finale hints at an emotional farewell, featuring a moving portrait of Lady Violet that’s already resonating with longtime fans of the franchise.

“She was very funny,” he recalled. “If you could make Maggie laugh, that felt really good. She was extraordinary and a kind of force on that set.”
“I have never really worked with an actor quite like her before,” Cullen added.
“It would feel like it is not quite there and then she would just deliver genius.”
Dame Maggie, who left behind two sons and five grandchildren, was remembered by her family as an “extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

Following her passing, tributes flooded in - among them a heartfelt message from Bonneville, who penned an emotional tribute.
He wrote: "Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent. She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances.
"My condolences to her boys and wider family."
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is set to premiere on September 12, 2025.
