She will perform in Liverpool when the international singing competition takes place later this year

Singer-songwriter Mae Muller has been announced as the UK's act for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

The 25-year-old will perform "I Wrote A Song" at the international contest in May.

Eurovision will be held in Liverpool this year, after Ukraine won in 2022 but was unable to host due to Russia's invasion.

Reacting to the announcement, Muller posted a video to Twitter.

Celebrating, she said: "Guys, I have some news that I've been keeping secret for a very long time and it's been very difficult.

"But I can finally announce that I am this year's UK entry for Eurovision with my song ‘I Wrote A Song’.

"It's out right now. So go stream it, go listen to it, go dance to it. And I just can't wait. I can't wait to see you all.

"I can't wait to get to Liverpool. I'm very excited. What is life?"

Elsewhere, she said: "I’ve loved watching Eurovision all my life, so to compete in such a massive music competition is simply brilliant.

“I’m a huge fan of so many of the artists that have found success at Eurovision, from Abba to Maneskin.

“Sam Ryder was so amazing last year and proved the UK can be back on the left-hand side of the leader board.”

Muller was born in 1997, the last time the UK won Eurovision.

She was chosen by bosses at the BBC and global management company TaP Music.

Co-founders Ben Mawson and Ed Millett said in a joint statement: “We have always been fans of Mae for her voice, songs and star charisma, and when we heard I Wrote A Song, we were really taken by its impactful message – ‘songs as a form of therapy’ (a great message for the biggest song contest in the world!) alongside its playful tone and up-tempo fun production.

“From the moment we met Mae, we knew she would be an incredible ambassador for the UK at Eurovision.

“Alongside her abundant talent, she has the most wonderfully warm and fun personality and expressed positivity and excitement about the opportunity to represent the UK.”

Tickets for the Eurovision final, which will take place at the Liverpool Arena went on sale earlier this week and sold out in just over half an hour.
