The Channel 4 series returned for its second run but left fans disappointed within minutes

Wednesday night saw the return of Channel 4 series Suspect with Anne-Marie Duff playing Susannah and Ben Miller playing Richard - but whilst fans were thrilled with the new instalment, they were left furious.

Kicking off the drama, the enigmatic man barged into Susannah's abode seeking assistance and quickly expressed to Susannah his desire to quit smoking whilst undergoing hypnosis.

However, the session soon took a twisted turn when the man - Jon Fallow (played by Dominic Cooper) - confessed to a more sinister past, admitting he had murdered before and divulged his plans to murder another woman that very evening.

Concerned, Susannah ran to call her contact in law enforcement but was stopped in her tracks when Jon came down the stairs - unaware of his earlier confession.

Not wanting to spark any reaction, Susannah lied and said she was speaking to a workmate for medical aid, alleging Jon had suffered a seizure, but the reason left him sceptical.

He insisted she end the call and hastily vacated the premises as police sirens neared - Susannah emerged from the house just moments too late to catch him.

Whist some fans were gripped at the drama, many eagle-eyed viewers were quick to point out some oversights in the show, noting there would have been DNA all over her house.

Taking to X, one armchair detective noted: "Surely there are fingerprints in her house and dashcam footage from the police who were towards the van."

"And DNA on the cigarette! And an IP address for his email," another expressed before a third said: "And who, after being married to a copper wouldn't memorise the number plate? I #suspect this is gonna be c**p!"

Someone else pointed out another peculiar inconsistency and penned: "Strange that he confessed to murder when she said he wouldn't tell her anything he didn't want to under the hypnosis."

Not all were left disappointed with the first episode of the new series, as one viewer praised: "Very intense first episode. Such a good final scene. Looking forward to tomorrow's" (sic)

The synopsis for episode three - which will air on Wednesday, July 24 - reads: "Susannah tracks down the witness, an escort called Sapphire. However, she reels when she learns the girl Jon killed was Christina, her daughter, and Sapphire is Jon's next target."

Discussing what viewers can expect from the new series, Duff explained: "It’s definitely a continuation from series one. It expects you to come to the table having known the previous circumstances.

"But it has a different flavour to series one and a different energy because it’s someone who is outside of the legal system trying to uncover a crime. It has a real female energy as it’s about a mother who is trying to reveal the truth.

"It’s thrilling but also profoundly moving and fascinating.

"Everyone brings a different quality into the room and a different mode of working with a different approach to the process, it keeps you open and curious."
