Tributes have poured in after the former BBC radio host passed away

BBC has been blasted by radio presenter Liz Kershaw for "dumping" Steve Wright.

Wright tragically passed away yesterday at the age of 69 after a decades-long career and the BBC paid tribute to the radio star.

In a statement, the BBC wrote: "All of us at the BBC are heartbroken to hear this terribly sad news. Steve was a truly wonderful broadcaster who has been a huge part of so many of our lives over many decades."

However, Kershaw claimed that the broadcaster should be "embarrassed" after they ended Wright's show in 2022.

BBC Radio Two fans were stunned when Steve was sacked from his Afternoon Show slot - bringing to an end his much-loved show.

Following the news that his time on air would be coming to a close, Steve was asked how he was feeling. He said at the time: "Sometimes people want you, sometimes they don't."

Speaking to GB News, Kershaw said: "It makes me feel sick. It's shabby and it's hypocritical.

"After 40 years or so, they just dumped him. They said it was new management, we're going to refresh the schedule.

"They treat people like tins of beans on a shelf. Oh, that's out of life, we're going to push it aside and put something in.

"There was a public outcry and I doubt that there was any follow-up, any pastoral care, any support for him. He didn't need money. He'd been one of the highest-paid people on air.

"But I wonder if they considered how it affected him. There are some people, for whom fame and attention and being in the buzz of it is their oxygen. And he was one of those.

"It was absolutely his life. I was advised on my first day at radio in 1987. Remember, it's not who you are, it's just what you do.

"Other characters now would include Steve in that, he was so focused and driven that it is who he is.

"To take it away from somebody and then come back fifteen months later when they're dead and say we will miss Steve.

"He was such a professional. He was brilliant. He was the best. I just don't know how they can say that.

"Also are they going to apologize to the public? Since his last show on the 30th of September 2022, Radio Two has lost 1.2 million listeners, which is 8 per cent of its audience. People know what they like.

"Nobody's got a job for life. Things have to change. But I think there are serious questions to be answered.

"I have had no contact with Steve for a few years now.

"I would only imagine that it was a shock to find he didn't have something to do anymore."
