BBC’s Saturday Kitchen took an awkward turn this morning when host Matt Tebbutt’s “too relaxed” behaviour was called out live on air.

The show returned to screens on Saturday morning with Tebbutt once again leading the show.

The episode featured culinary talents Paul Ainsworth, Sam Evans and Shauna Guinn, alongside pop icon Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

While the show typically runs with good humour and culinary cheer, a light-hearted exchange took a slightly awkward turn when a guest made a cheeky remark about Tebbutt’s laid-back demeanour - prompting the host to quickly change the subject.

As chef Paul Ainsworth prepared a dish for the studio guests, Matt asked: “Is this on the menu in your restaurant Caffè Rojano?”

Paul confirmed: “Yes, we put this on the menu,” to which Matt responded with enthusiasm: “It’s a great restaurant.”

Wine expert Olly Smith joined in with his own praise, saying: “I love it, me and my family, we’ve gone there several times. Really informal setting, delicious food.”

Matt agreed, adding: “Super relaxed.” However, Olly then teased: “Well, in your case Matthew, very relaxed. A little too relaxed perhaps…”

The studio briefly fell silent as the comment hung in the air.

Attempting to move things along, Matt interjected with a firm: “Let’s park that there!”

But chef Paul wasn’t quite ready to drop the subject.

“Shall we go there? Shall we go there?!” he laughed.

“Let’s not,” Matt replied, though Paul pressed on: “I think the viewers need to know that you fell asleep in Caffè Rojano!”

Tebbutt said the show’s production team is “like family,” and that despite appearances, it often takes considerable rehearsal and coordination to pull off each live episode

Matt, clearly amused and slightly sheepish, laughed along with the others and admitted: “It had been a long day.”

The humorous moment came not long after Matt had opened up about the realities of working on live television, sharing insight into some of the challenges faced behind the scenes.

While the 51-year-old presenter has expressed how much he enjoys the fast-paced format of the live food show, he also acknowledged the hard work involved in keeping the broadcast running smoothly week after week.

Having taken over from James Martin in 2017, Tebbutt said the show’s production team is “like family,” and that despite appearances, it often takes considerable rehearsal and coordination to pull off each live episode—adding that it may look like they “wing it” at times, but there’s a lot of preparation involved.
