Atletico Madrid were beaten in the dying seconds by Liverpool

Diego Simeone was sent off the pitch in the dying moments of the Champions League clash between Atletico Madrid and Liverpool after an altercation with a fan at Anfield.

Simeone’s side had worked their way back into the match with two great goals from Marcus Llorente before Virgil van Dijk thundered in a header in the final seconds to steal the points for the home side.


The Atletico manager was left incensed, and cameras quickly cut to the manager clashing with a fan before quickly returning to the Liverpool players' celebrations.

Liverpool raced to an early lead in the opening minutes of the game after Andy Robertson scored his first Champions League goal in six years, deflecting Mohamed Salah’s free kick into the net within the first three minutes.

Salah then doubled the lead two minutes later with great individual skill to keep his balance between 3 Atletico defenders to slot it past Jan Oblak on his 500th start for the Spanish side.

Madrid then built their way back into the match and scored a deserved goal through Marcos Llorente just before the half-time whistle to lower the volume of the Anfield faithful.

The second half was full of lots of opportunities for both sides, most notably when Salah clattered the bar when he could have made the game 3-1.

But Liverpool could not find the goal they needed, and with 10 minutes of regulation left, Llorente hit a deflected shot past Alisson to level the game for Atletico.

Liverpool piled pressure on for the remaining moments, and in the final seconds of added time, Van Dijk stepped up to win yet another game for Liverpool in the dying seconds this season, but it was the celebrating supporters that took the focus of the Madrid manager as he was in the crowd shouting at one of them.

Simeone was shown a red card for foul and abusive language after he had to be pulled way from the fan he was confronting in the crowd.

The manager has gained a reputation for wearing his emotions on his sleeve, and the commentary team had pointed out how he had controlled his emotions throughout a stressful game for both sides; however, it all came to a head when the draw was taken away from them.

Fans all over the stadium were in chaos after the thriller of a game, and while it is not known what caused the altercation at the time of writing, it was something that incensed the Argentine.

The incident will have ramifications for the manager as he will be banned from the touchline and technical area for the second matchday against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Both teams will now turn their attention to their domestic campaigns. Liverpool will go on to face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid will go on to face Mallorca as they try to get their La Liga season on the right track, they are already seven points behind leaders Real Madrid four games into the new season.
