A man has been left in a "critical condition" after being shot by police in a quiet street in Surrey.
Officers had descended on Nursery Road in Knaphill, Woking, just after midnight on Sunday after receiving reports of an "armed altercation" in the street.
Surrey Police confirmed that a man in his 20s, who has since been taken to hospital, was shot by armed officers at the scene.
In a statement released just before midday, the force confirmed that one of the two people involved in the street fight was a "man armed with a weapon" - and added that officers had seized said weapon.
Nursery Road, which runs around a green square, was the scene of the shooting in the early hours of Sunday
Police also detailed that the pair were known to each other, and have said there is no risk to the wider public following the incident.
In light of the shooting, the force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) - a necessity due to the man's serious injury "following the contact with the police", according to the body.
The shooting victim is still in hospital, the police said, where he "remains at this time in a critical but stable condition".
His next-of-kin have been informed, they added.
MORE FROM SURREY AND THE SOUTH EAST:
Surrey Police confirmed it would be supporting the mandatory IOPC investigation.
Nursery Road, a leafy street which runs a ring around a tree-lined square, has been partially cordoned off.
The force outlined that the leafy residential road is "partially closed with limited foot and vehicle access to residents", and have urged the public to stay away "for the time being".
A Surrey Police statement added: "We appreciate the localised disruption this will cause and would like to thank the community for their cooperation and patience while our enquiries are underway."
Officers were called from Surrey Police HQ in central Woking to nearby Knaphill
Police have urged any members of the public with useful information to get in touch - especially if they "saw or heard anything between 12.15am and 1.30am" on Sunday.
Anyone with video footage - from CCTV, video doorbells, dash-cam or helmet-cam - has also been told to speak up online or over the phone quoting reference number PR/45240091308.
Police also recommended that the public speak to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The force added that it would not be able to comment further on the IOPC investigation into the shooting.
