The UK needs to be prepared for more extreme weather following chaos caused by Storm Arwen, according to Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.
The MP says the climate crisis is likely to result in similar events, as more than 30,000 houses remain without power.
Kwasi Kwarteng said the majority of those people will have power restored 'in the next day or two', although he admits that some in remote locations may have to wait longer.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, UK Government Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng promised to do everything possible to restore power to homes affected by Storm Arwen before Christmas.
A resident whose home lost power after Storm Arwen has described feeling 'inconsolable and scared' as she faces a sixth night without central heating.
The storm has resulted in 100mph winds, ripping down power lines, uprooting trees and causing debris blockages on roads.
'Clearly Storm Arwen was an event the likes of which we haven’t seen for certainly 60 years since the record starts. We have to be prepared for similarly extreme, difficult weather conditions in the future. We have to make sure that our system is resilient in that eventuality,' the Business Secretary told the House of Commons on Wednesday.
