England made two changes for their Euro 2020 quarter-final clash with Ukraine in Rome as Manchester United-bound Jadon Sancho was handed his first start of the tournament.
Kane’s opener only four minutes into the start of the match changed the dynamics of the match and settled England, who pressed smartly and held a high defensive line as Ukraine failed to create.
Ukraine had given England something to think about before the break, but 54 seconds into the second half Southgate’s side were 2-0 up.
Kane was then fouled and Shaw sent over an exquisite free-kick from the left for Harry Maguire to power home a header in the 50th minute.
England roared once again as Jordan Henderson scored a fourth goal in the 63rd minute.
A party atmosphere had broken out in Trafalgar Square after England’s second goal, where fans got up on tables and ignored calls from security to sit down. Organisers had threatened to cut the feed to the match if they did not sit down, however the fans continued.
